To loose weight, you need to have a net negative in total  
calorie intake in good quality foods (whole foods, no processed  
stuff).  I used the BMI as a starting point. From that, I  
determined the max daily calories to achieve the weight I  
wanted to have.  For me, it was 1800 cals per day, and that  
worked out to about 100 cals per waking hour. With the per hour  
insight, I realized that snacking between the 3 traditional  
mealtimes was ok as long as I did not exceed the total for the  
day. And, by maintaining a steadier cals in shorter hour  
intervals, I was less hungry overall.
Another factor in the eating plan was more activity. Most of my  
work could be considered sit-down office work (although I  
actually stand at my desk and counter) most of the time. But  
through the encouragement of a friend, I doubled my average  
daily steps and kms from about 1500 steps or 1.6km, to between   
2500-4000 steps or almost 3kms.  I just started looking for  
opportunities to walk more: parking further away from  
department store entrances, navigating almost every aisle in  
the grocery store even if i don't need anything from that  
aisle, etc.
I see guys about my age who have protruding guts. I was on the  
verge of having one myself, but not anymore.  I don't have the  
definition in abs (have still too much viscercal fat from years  
of bad diet) ..but it's look better, gradually.
