Hi everyone,

I'm starting to notice a bit of a fall-like feeling in the air locally
though I know darn well that towards the end of the month it'll get hot as
hell again before fall settles in. But it's nice to have a bit of cool air. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I am hoping to have a better autumn than
I did last year as around Labor Day (1 September), I caught COVID again and
it was the worst case yet. I hope not to repeat last fall and winter as I
was not only sick the whole time but I was hospitalized for nearly the
entirety of winter.

I bought a new little pre-lighted Christmas tree that I didn't even get to
take out of the box lasy year. I'm hoping to be able to spend all of the holidays at home and happy this year.

I recently discovered that one of my amateur radios that I thought was broken is ineed fully functional so I have been saving up for a few months to buy a special type of amateur rafio antenna that I can use in my living situation. It's not cheap--around USD$450 when it's all said and done--but I'll be able
to mount it on my access ramp without issue. It's 23 feet (7 meters) tall
but has a profile to where it is not easily noticeable. It will be nice to have the radio working to have something fun to do when it's too cold and
dark outside to do anything else.

The new BBS is going well and I'm glad I finally switched over systems.

Now to get the apartment cleaned up and ready for winter...my next big
project!

My friend hangs his Christmas tree from the ceiling so his
cats won't get into it. So funny...the cats sit there and
glare at it for three months straight.

An upside-down installation?

Or.. is it just a regular look but off the floor a few feet?

In either case, I would imagine that it would need to be fairly
high off the floor inorder to discourage cats, 'cuz a frisky
young cat could still try to leap or jump into it.

Autumn is also my favorite, and I hope yours goes much better this year. I also agree there is a near-guarantee that it will get hot as hell at least
one more time as the Kentucky State Fair will start here soon. ;)

Autumn weather is finally heading my way. It's finally dropped into the 80s, LOL. No leaves falling yet but I assume soon. My Autumn Joy sedum is
blooming so I figure it won't be too much longer before the weather starts to change. I've noticed as I get older, I can't take the temperatures I used
to able to tolerate. Another fun part about getting older.

I am ready for the holidays and I noticed today Walmart already has all of their Christmas stock in already. I remember when you'd not see anything Christmas-y until after Halloween.

But I'm still alive, even if it against my will sometimes... XD

Leaves started dropping off some of the trees here about a month ago. IMHO, not so much a sign of Autumn, but low rainfall and heat got them started early. Most of them are just getting started now.

Yeah, it seems to me like once upon a time it was not even immediately after Halloween, but closer to before Thanksgiving (in time for Black Friday!). When I worked at Target in 1987, I do believe we started putting out some Christmas stuff in the "seasonal area," after we cleared it of all of the unsold Halloween costumes and decor, but the stuff like Christmas trees came out a little later.

Two weeks ago today, I noticed that Cracker Barrel here in town had out Halloween and Christmas stuff. There was already at least one Christmas tree out. :O :D I didn't pay attention when I was in Wal-Mart last week.

Those still around? I miss bookstores. I remember when indie shops got pushed aside from the likes of B.Dalton's, Borders, etc. How ironic that they too got pushed aside by Amazon, Good Reads, etc.

My parents have a massive and beautiful weeping cherry tree in their front
yard that got waterlogged from all the torrential rain we've had and the
thing dropped all of its leaves in August. From what my mom tells me, those trees are known to do that. Around my neighborhood, I haven't seen any
trees start to change color let alone drop leaves yet.

I am not surprised at that, especially at Cracker Barrel. I've noticed all
of the big home decor stores here, such as Hobby Lobby, At Home, Home Goods, and the like, are already in full bloom with Christmas stuff. They have
other seasonal goods for Halloween and Thanksgiving, but their main focus is
on Christmas stuff.

I guess my issue is just the over-commercialization of Christmas and the
major holidays in general.

There's a huge used book store in my town that's been around for the last 20 years (how long I've lived here) and probably much longer called "Book
Lover's Warehouse". They have used books of all kinds as well as music, comics, et cetera. It's owned by a couple and they have all sorts of neat things to browse--and occasionally buy if my limited budget allows--and you
can spend a long time in there.

We do have a big Barnes and Noble on the other end of town which is nice but
it doesn't have that "je ne sais quoi" that Book Lover's Warehouse does.

It didn't get above 73 today as it was rainy and cloudy. It reminded me of
an Oregon winter. However, the 80s will be back in a few days, ugh.

I was born in August and I despise the hot, miserable, and humid weather that is usually present on my birthday.

The tree I was thinking of when I typed that is a Cherry. Although not weeping, it does have the small pinkish blooms that the weepers do. Maybe wet was its issue... we have alternated between very wet and very dry so maybe I only noticed it after it got dry. My neighbor has some sort of ornamental fruit tree that did the same thing... all the leaves on both trees are already gone.

Around my neighborhood, I haven't seen any trees start to

change color let alone drop leaves yet.

Some of the Tulip Poplars and Locusts have started turning yellow, and dropping. The Locusts often do that early, though. I have a tree/bush of unknown type that has leaves that turn a beautiful red and it started early, too. The Maples and the Redbud seem to be holding onto most of theirs pretty well, as does my other Cherry tree (different variety with bigger "carnation-looking" flowers).

I guess my issue is just the over-commercialization of Christmas
and the major holidays in general.

Oh, yeah, I think Thanksgiving and Christmas were more enjoyable before that time of year got so commercialized.

Up where I am in Canada we had frost warnings a couple of days ago.
Fortunately it has warmed up a little since then. Days are currently
sunny and in the high 60's F and nights slowly warming over the next
week from about 40F to 53F..

I know what you mean about getting older though.. Winter lows have
krept up over the years but I feel -25F more than I used to feel -40F.
Lots of time outside in winter shoveling snow from about 400 feet of
walkways around my place. This may be the last winter I stay here
over the winter.. I'm 72 BTW..

Probably.. Even here where in Middle Canada where it's been colder
than there we are barely starting to get leaves changing colour,
let alone dropping.

Two nights this week we've had frost warnings but where I am, right
beide the water, I don't think it got quite that cold.

Usually items for the next holiday start to show up immediately
after the current holiday. Our Thanksgiving is earlier in Canada
(Oct. 12th this year) but, now that I think about it, Walmart
seems to have some items, probably leftovers from last year,
that are probably intended for Halloween, although I didn't see
a sign saying that, just big boxes of small chocolate things.

A lot of businesses do about 40% of their annual sales at Christmas
time so you can understand them pushing it a bit..

I'm not saying it's a good situation, just a reality..

I've gotten away from all that stuff.. I have not given or gotten
a Christmas present in years..

The closest town to me is Parry Sound, which is pretty small. Not
counting tourists the permanent population in town is around 7000.
But we have a good sized Library plus Parry Sound Books that sells
new books and a Huge place called Bearly Used Books that has many
thousands of used books, likely more than the Library.

Lots of swapping back and forth between Bearly Used Books and
the Library. I told the head Librarian that I had about 600
books I wanted to donate to them and she suggested that I take
them to Bearly instead and have them credit the Library with
whatever they would normally pay for the books so they could
purchase some books there the Library wanted but didn't have.
