Title: Yellow Split Pea Dal #2
Categories: Curry, Indian
Yield: 8 Servings
2 c Yellow split peas
1 lg Onion
4 Cloves garlic
1/4 c Butter
1 tb Ground coriander
1 tb Ground cumin
1 tb Ground turmeric
1 ts Ground cardamom
1/4 ts Ground cloves
2 ts Indian chili powder
2 ts Salt
3/4 c Dessicated coconut; (dried,
-shredded coconut)
1/2 cn Coconut milk
1 cn (14 oz) diced tomatoes
I cooked this in a large crock pot.
Rinse split peas and drain. Put split peas in crock pot. Add water
until split peas are 1/2 inch below water. Cook on high heat. Add
coconut milk and desiccated coconut to crock pot.
Mince onions. Saute in ghee or oil until the onions are soft. Stir in
the garlic and spices. Cook for two minutes. Add all to crock pot.
The split peas absorb water as they cook. Add a little more water if
necessary. This dish should be fairly liquid.
Cook in the slow cooker for 2 hours or until the split peas have
reached the desired softness.
Add salt and tomatoes to the dal just before serving.
Optional:
Serve with chopped cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and cilantro.
